Recommended Mouth Piece Upgrades |

Attached is a list of mouthpiece upgrades that I strongly recommend. One of the reasons for the Wind Ensembles success has been having the band play on matching equipment. These mouthpieces sound better, match sound and pitch better (when everyone plays the same) and are easier to play! They will also be great for high school. I have negotiated special pricing (BELOW RETAIL) from Bellflower Music (562)867-6715. Feel free to call them and state that your student goes to Calle Mayor. They will sell the products at the price below and deliver to Calle. Although you may find these elsewhere, I think this is a great service provided by Bellflower. Although I recommend this equipment for all band members, the mouthpieces etc. below are a requirement for all Wind Ensemble students.

The Calle Mayor Wind Ensemble is the top group at Calle Mayor Middle School in Torrance, California. Torrance is in the Los Angeles area. Comprised of mostly 8th graders and a few 7th graders, it is by audition only. Although students are encouraged to take private lessons, less than 20% actually do. They received their third straight Superior rating at the Southern California School Band & Orchestra Association Festival in March, 2010. Last year's Wind Ensemble received a Unanimous Superior rating at SCSBOA Regionals and at Music in the Parks, in San Francisco. The Wind Ensemble also commissioned an original work for band by John O'Reilly called Early American Hymn Song. |
In the Calle Mayor Middle School Jazz Band, student musicians learn to improvise solos. This band plays jazz standards and modern pieces. It performs at the Calle Mayor Music Department's Fall, Winter, and Spring Concerts, a judged festival, and several other events. The jazz band is available for hire at weddings and other special events. Students in this ensemble may also play in Concert Band or Wind Ensemble if they take zero-period PE.

Beginning Band is the setting for sixth-grade musicians to learn to play an instrument with good tone quality and in a group. No experience is necessary. This band performs a Winter Concert, South Area Festival and the Spring Concert. It also performs at the 8th grade promotion ceremony. |
